Esperanza Spalding and Lady Day

Black History: Past, Present and Future

I love Esperanza Spalding. Who is she??!!?? She is a big afro wearing, jazz bassist, first jazz artist to win a Grammy in the “Best New Artist” category and the woman who sang “On The Sunny Side of The Street” at the White House January 8, 2016.

She is amazing. Her performance was breathtaking. The song was so beautiful! “On The Sunny Side of The Street” notably sung by Billie Holiday, known as Lady Day.  Billie Holiday was a legendary jazz & blues singer and one of my favorite songs by her is “Strange Fruit”, but after hearing Esperanza Spalding’s rendition of “On The Sunny Side of The Street”…I think I have a new favorite.

It’s more upbeat and encourages having a brighter outlook on life. Just walk in light on the sunny side of the street.
